The ADA made a key change in the 2008 Clinical Practice Recommendations regarding low carbohydrate diets. “There is increasing evidence that low-carbohydrate diets are as effective in leading to weight loss as diets that focus on lowering fat intake.” The ADA recommends, “for weight loss, either low-carbohydrate or low-fat calorie-restricted diets may be effective in the short term (up to 1 year).” These new recommendations are followed by specific instructions for health care professionals to monitor persons with diabetes on a low-carbohydrate diet. This includes checking lipid profiles, protein intake and kidney function in those with neuropathy and other kidney problems. 2008 is an ideal time to see a registered dietician for a nutrition evaluation.
